Zeppelin - Ship of Dreams

Talk Description and preview

Count Zeppelin always saw his airships as a means of transport as well as a weapon. In this talk we look at the heyday of travel in these huge craft. We will see how the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg provided luxurious travel across the Atlantic. How they were built and flown and what it was like to fly on the magnificent but dangerous craft.

David Skillen

David Skillen is an engaging and animated professional speaker on a variety of historical subjects. During his 35 years in the Civil Service he ran training programmes on public speaking and spoke to audiences from 5 to 500 people. Since retiring five years ago David has travelled extensively across the UK giving fully illustrated talks to a variety of groups such as, Probus, WI, National Trust, Local History Groups and U3A.

D-Day

Just what was D-Day like for the people at home? How did they hear of it? How did they react to it? They must have rejoiced that we were taking the war to Germany of course. However, what about the concern over friends and family in the forces?This is the story of one family's experience, based around that of Simon's grandparents.

V-E Day

Meet Harry Kay, a veteran of WW1, now a civilian and living at home with his family. He is dealing with the privations of a different sort of war, the air raids and rationing. Listen how he and his family experienced V-E Day. There are period newspapers, ration books and identity cards to show you.
