US History

A Line in the Sand

Talk Description and preview

In 1836 a small group of Texans were besieged then wiped out by the Mexican army at a mission station in San Antonio Texas. For Americans the Alamo has assumed a mythical status and the John Wayne film of the 1960s tells it all. But what did happen in those 13 days? With illustrations based on my own research and visits to the Alamo let’s go to Texas and meet Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis.

Talk length - 33 minutes.

A few appropriate remarks

Talk Description and preview

In November 1863, just outside Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln gave a short speech at the dedication of a cemetery for soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. What did Lincoln say and why is the Gettysburg address still relevant to the modern United States and the issues it faces? In this fully illustrated talk David looks at the battle, its significance in the American Civil War, and the commemorative event that led to those “few appropriate remarks”.

Talk length - 27 minutes.
